Bone cement is injected into osteolytic lesions to provide mechanical support in areas of weakened bone, a procedure is known as cementoplasty. Osteoblastic lesions are unsuitable for treatment because they do not allow for enough cement diffusion. Painful metastatic bone disease is the most typical indication, though benign pathologies like sacral insufficiency fractures can also be treated. Bone metastases can be treated palliatively with cementoplasty. It can be used in place of or in addition to other medical procedures like radiotherapy, cryotherapy, or radiofrequency ablation. In cases where the spine and pelvis are affected by metastases, it is typically done to relieve pain. Additionally, it can be used to stabilize bones in cases of lytic metastases that pose a fracture risk. It shouldn't be regarded as a cancer treatment, in contrast to ablation methods.
